Neighbourhood Houses -  Building Communities Across Tasmania

Strategic Framework Launch and Announcement of Full Time Funding For Neighbourhood Houses

The Health & Human Services Minister Lara Giddings today launched the “Neighbourhood Houses – Building Community - Strategic Framework 2009 – 2013” at Warrane Mornington Neighbourhood Centre.

At the launch the minister also confirmed the granting of an extra $700 000 per year to the critical work of Neighbourhood Houses in Tasmania.

Speaking at the launch the Minister acknowledged that this new funding reflected the vital role Neighbourhood Houses play in bringing local people together in isolated and disadvantaged communities to work together to address needs.

John Hooper, Executive Officer of Tasmanian Association of Community Houses (TACH) said today “For five years Neighbourhood Houses in Tasmania have been working under the previous strategic framework.  The new refined framework ensures that each house continues to report consistently on the outcomes they achieve in their community.”

Under the framework Neighbourhood Houses bring local people together to work out what is most needed in their community, and then more importantly work together to provide it. This ranges from activities like Young Mums playgroups, to volunteer run gardening and home maintenance crews to assist the elderly & people with a disability, or hosting vocational education to help people get back into work.

Ann Harrison, TACH President and coordinator of Risdon Vale Neighbourhood Centre was particularly delighted with the funding announcement and said, “I’ve been waiting 18 years for our Neighbourhood Centre to be funded to operate full time in the local community – and finally it’s happened.  It’s fantastic.”

“Neighbourhood Houses are organisations run by the community for the community.  For years we have been struggling with part time coordinators and unviable funding given the needs in our communities.  So from Rosebery to Geeveston, in Clarendon Vale and Rocherlea, St Helens and Ulverstone, there are 33 management committees, coordinators and an army of volunteers that are celebrating today’s launch and the commitment of funding”.

On behalf of the communities that will benefit, we would like to congratulate the  Minister for Health & Human Services, and the State Government, on demonstrating its commitment to a fairer and more inclusive Tasmania through the announcements today.
